I have always been attracted to cold water - winter sunrise swims are my favourite. I am also an ashtanga yoga practitioner who likes to integrate this practice with meditation and chanting. All of these activities have kept me connected to my body and greatly helped me through the difficult times in my life. I was born in Peru and love the outdoors. I have hiked the ‘Inca trail’ to Machu Picchu and climbed ‘Nevado Pastoruri’ of Huaraz in the Peruvian Andes.
In 2017, I heard that Wim Hof was coming to Australia. It was during a meditation session and I became so excited. Like Wim, I had felt for decades that I had been engaging in ‘crazy’ activities that were good for your health. However, seeing Wim and being introduced to WHM exceeded any of the ideas that I had developed from my ‘rain, hail or shine winter swims and cold showers’.
At the time I was working as a university lecturer, while trying to complete a PhD. I loved my job but at times I felt overwhelmed. I would get very anxious and I could see that was damaging my relationships and my health. I contracted a viral condition called shingles and a skin condition called rosacea. My skin was itchy, red and soar. The doctor prescribed tablets for inflammation, but I never bought them. There had to be a better way than taking medicine.
This is when my friend invited me to a Wim Hof workshop.
Full of anticipation, I attended my first workshop with Wim Hof. The breathing was so deep and unique. I had the sensation of electricity travelling along my arms and legs. Wim Hof's strong voice over Pink Floyd music was so powerful: ’Breathe in, breath out, inhale fully and let it go’.
I attended more workshops. It occurred to me that I was finding it easier meditate. I had always found meditating properly a bit difficult because of a busy mind. I am by nature curious like a child, so I delved further into this experience. Immersing myself in the ice took my breath away but breathing and mindset are the keys to staying calm. Slowly your body starts to adapt and you enjoy the feeling of the cold. It’s like reaching the top of the highest mountain. I have been practicing the WHM regularly since these first intense experiences.
The outcome not only helped me on my emotional, mental and spiritual levels. The WHM also improved my physical wellness. My face’s skin condition cleared up. The shingles never came back because of my strengthened immune system and I became more relaxed and calmer. My family and friends noticed the difference and started showing interest in the method, which inspired me to become an instructor.
The science behind WHM truly fascinates me. The latest studies: ‘Brain over body’ and ‘Endotoxin study’ demonstrate that; ‘The human being is capable of voluntarily influencing his autonomous nervous system and immune response’. Having studied the science behind Wim’s method as part of successfully becoming a WHMinstructor, I am excited to share with you the theory and practice of the WHM, as well as my personal experiences.
Please join me on a journey of discovery so we can find strength and calmness for your mind, body and soul.
