Building physical and mental resilience by overcoming challenges and seeking adventure. Let's grow together!
Instructor Level
Aloha! I'm a firefighter and adventure seeker based on the beautiful island of Maui, Hawaii. I believe that the most beautiful growth often comes from the most challenging experiences, and through intentionally challenging ourselves and connecting with nature, we can build incredible physical and mental resilience.
The Wim Hof Method initially came to me in 2020, while seeking self improvement and growth. The importance of each pillar, however, fell into place at different times along my journey.
While sailing from Maui to Tahiti in 2021 (on the trip from hell), I was desperate to find a way to escape the physical and mental turmoil I was experiencing, seriously considering jumping off of the boat in the middle of the Pacific Ocean, feeling I might actually be better off. My daily WHM breathwork practice became my sanctuary, brought me back to center, and quite literally saved my life. It was on this trip that I realized, woah! This breathwork is good shit!
The next year, in 2022, I was solo climbing Aconcagua, the tallest mountain in South America (22,837 ft), and I had a stroke on the top (well, almost the top- 22,050 feet). Yep. Like a blood clot in my brain, full right sided paralysis, and inability to speak. Now, mindest/commitment can mean many things, and all of them are important, but in this moment it really sunk in for me just how powerful your mind can be. You can decide and commit to eating healthy, you can decide and commit to jumping off a 20 foot waterfall, and similarly, you can decide and commit to LIVE. Long story short, this was powerful for me.
Finally, just recently in 2024, the cold water showed me just how influential she can be. I've essentially been cold plunging since I was a child. Growing up in Colorado, my sister and I would swim in glacial lakes, tromp around in near freezing rivers, and make snow angels in our swim suits going back and fourth from the hot tub. I have long been aware of the physical and mental benefits of cold exposure. However, in 2023 my coworkers and I responded to a terrible fire on Maui. Multiple fires, actually, that completely leveled our beloved town of Lahaina, as well as multiple other homes and lives on the island. Afterwards, I experienced quite a bit of depression (understandably so), and after living in a fog for months on end, I finally decided to take an ice bath. I got in, and felt like I got slapped in the face, the fog lifting, and awareness coming back to me. Feeling these feeling is ok, but being able to aknowledge them, and gently move past them, without letting them run your life, was a realization that the ice (and the flood of hormones that it allows the body to release...) gifted me. A gift I am eternally grateful for.
When we allow these three pillars to interact congruently, they flow together to optimize our bodies and our minds. And especially when we combine them with nature, I've found the benefits to be immeasurable. I hope to be able to help you realize these benefits as well, and allow you to reach the full potential you seek in your body and your mind.
All the love,
Kelsey
